Statement from the Maryland Municipal League on the Passing of Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates Michael E. Busch
Maryland’s cities and towns join the voices across Maryland mourning the loss of Speaker Mike Busch, a true friend and dedicated legislator for all Marylanders. Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.
“Speaker Busch resided in and loved our Capital City of Annapolis. He always looked out for Maryland’s cites inquiring frequently on the impact of legislative action on our 157 members. He was one-of-a-kind and will be sorely missed by Maryland’s government closest to the people,” said Scott Hancock, Executive Director of the Maryland Municipal League (MML).
MML President and Mayor of the City of Rockville Bridget Donnell-Newton added, “Speaker Busch epitomized leadership and showed us all how politics should work. He was strong and humble, fair and forward thinking. Maryland’s cities and towns are better because he appreciated the value of the partnership between local and state government.”
Speaker Busch was one of the six Maryland delegates to receive the MML “Municipal Super Star” award for going above and beyond on behalf of municipal government during the 2018 General Assembly legislative session, having previously earned that honor in 2009 and 2013. He was also awarded MML’s Distinguished Service Award in 2008 and 2011.
