[ARCHIVED] More MDGA Committee Chair Changes on the Way

state.house.flag.3.170

The State legislature has undertaken significant leadership changes since the last statewide election in 2018. After the passing of longtime House Speaker Mike Busch in 2019, Delegate Adrienne Jones rose to the top position in the House. The following year, Sen. Bill Ferguson became the Senate President after the late Thomas V. “Mike” Miller stepped down amidst his battle with prostate cancer.

While Ferguson ushered in a wave of new Committee Chairs in the Senate, the House’s six committee chairs remained in place. But even that has begun to change.

Now former Chair Anne Kaiser (Ways and Means Committee) has stepped down from her position and said she will not seek reelection. Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary was appointed to her seat.

Now former Chair Dereck Davis (Economic Matters Committee) was elected to fill the role of State Treasurer last week and stepped down from his role to assume that position. Delegate C.T. Wilson was named his successor.

Chairs Maggie McIntosh (Appropriations) and Shane Pendergrass (Health and Government Operations) have both said that they will not seek reelection but will continue their duties as chair for their final sessions.

And in the Senate, Chair Delores Kelley is similarly not seeking reelection but will continue in her role this session.

The League has held good relationships with these distinguished leaders over the years, thanks them for their contributions to the State, and wishes them well moving forward.
