You need the App! 

Download MML’s mobile conference app for everything you’ll need to know in Ocean City. Smartphone and tablet users can download the mobile app from the App Store (iPhone and iPad) or from the Google Play Store (Android) by searching “MMLCon19”. Blackberry, Windows Phone, and PC users can view the app in their browser by visiting this link.  

The app provides access to the summer conference schedule, session descriptions and alerts, presenter and exhibitor profiles, polls, and maps. You can also share your own tweets and photos, plus send messages of interest to other attendees throughout the four-day event. Updated daily. Plus, everyone who downloads the MMLCon19 app will be entered in a drawing for 2-night stay at an Ocean City hotel!!!

But I just want a hard copy of the schedule.

Reviewing the conference schedule prior to getting your registration materials in Ocean City will help you plan which workshops you want to attend and enable you to coordinate your schedule with other officials from your municipality so that all sessions are covered. You can also view the program on MML’s conference app and create your own schedule after you decide which sessions to attend. 

Note that for many workshops this year, the MML conference app and website will be the only way to access copies of presenter PowerPoints and other traditional workshop handouts. In addition, session descriptions and speaker bios are available exclusively through the conference app and will not appear in the Program booklet.

Are there any good speakers this year?

Plan to attend MML’s opening general session on Monday, June 24 at 10:00 am to be inspired by Dr. Bertice Berry, world renown sociologist, speaker and expert . Her topic, Together We Can – Together YOU Can complements MML President Bridget Donnell Newton’s year-long theme of Together We Can.   Dr. Berry helps us see that we have to know ourselves and follow our unique path first, and then, together we can change the world. On Tuesday, June 25 from 10:30 – 11:30 am general session speaker Charles Marohn, President & Founder of Strong Towns, will share his Curbside Chat about what we need to do to ensure our cities and towns stay strong and resilient. You seriously won’t want to miss either of these speaker’s messages!

How late is registration open?

MML's summer conference registration desk (located in the Level 1 Lobby) will be open during the following hours:

  • Sunday, June 23 from 1 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Monday, June 24 from 8 am to 4:30 pm 
  • Tuesday, June 25 from 8 am to 4:30 pm 
  • Wednesday, June 26 from 8:30 am to Noon

I want free swag!

Be sure to block time in your conference schedule to visit the 235 exhibit booths. A wide array of products and services will be on display in Exhibit Halls A/B and Dockside. Review the list of exhibitors now and plan your time in the exhibit halls. My kids want free swag!

Children (under age 16) will be permitted in the exhibit areas only on Tuesday, June 25 from 1 – 2 pm.  They must be accompanied at all times by a registered adult.

I only want to go to the Exhibit Hall.

Municipal department heads, employees, and other municipal officials who cannot attend all of MML's summer conference are invited to visit the Expo on Tuesday, June 25 from 9:30 am to 2 pm. The cost is $50 per person and includes lunch. There is no pre-registration for Commerce Day. Visit the MML registration desk at the Convention Center on Tuesday and pay the $50 fee to receive a special pass to the exhibit areas.

Which type of Town are you?

There are many issues shared across Maryland's municipalities. However, MML's summer conference offers an opportunity for member cities and towns to group together based on size. This year, on Tuesday from 3 – 4:30 pm, there will be forums for large cities, small towns, and tiny towns. Participants are encouraged to self-select the forum they believe best represents their municipality, to network and brainstorm with officials from cities and towns who share special interests based on their municipality’s population and culture.

Yes! You Do Need Your Badges.

Current-year MML name badges will be required for admission to all summer conference workshops, general sessions, and the exhibit areas. Door monitors will be at the entrance to all sessions.  Only those wearing a 2019 MML name badge will be admitted.

What do I wear?

Temperatures in Convention Center meeting rooms vary. For your personal comfort, take a sweater or light jacket to all events.  Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended by your Conference Planning Committee members!

MML’s Conference Planning Committee encourages you to wear casual attire to conference events including the Boardwalk Gala Dinner on Tuesday (dressy attire optional). Some attendees dress up for the dinner but many do not.  Many attendees opt to wear shirts embroidered with their municipal logo or the MML logo.  

There IS Such a Thing As A Free Ride!

As the host town for MML's summer conference, Ocean City's Mayor and Council have generously agreed that MML conference attendees can ride Ocean City's buses free of charge on June 23, 24, 25, and 26. Just show your MML conference name badge to the bus driver.  MML attendees ride free. The Convention Center bus stop is on Coastal Highway. Riders will walk from the highway to the Convention Center. Buses run at 10-minute intervals from 6 am to 3 am, 20-minute intervals from 3 am to 6 am. For handicapped bus service, call (410) 723-1607 at least one hour in advance. Please take advantage of this hassle-free way of getting to MML conference activities at the Convention Center!

GOTV! (MML Style)

It is important that each municipality send a representative to vote for MML’s 2019-20 Board of Directors on Tuesday, June 25, 2019. Voting occurs from 8:30 - 9:05 a.m., followed by MML’s Business Meeting from 9:00 – 10:15 a.m.

  • Each MML member municipality is entitled to one vote at the business meeting.
  • One representative from each participating municipality should pick up voting materials at the credentials desk outside the business meeting room.
  • A mayor or a mayor’s designated elected official from the mayor’s municipality has primary authority to carry the vote for a municipality.
  • Voting materials include a ballot to vote (from 8:30 a.m. to 9:05 a.m.) for the MML Board of Directors, a special ballot to be used in the event of a tie vote in the election, and a voting card to allow your municipality to vote on issues during the business meeting beginning at 9:00 a.m.
  • Proxy voting information and materials will be available at the registration desk in the Level 1 Lobby of the Convention Center.

Proxy Procedure?

Any one direct member municipality may exercise a voting proxy (municipal proxy) from one other direct member municipality. In the event that no elected municipal official is present at a League meeting from a given municipality, an administrative officer (a city or town's manager, administrator, clerk or other appointed official) of that municipality may exercise all rights as a delegate provided the officer receives the written authorization (administrative proxy) to do so from that person's municipality. Proxies will be rejected for any of the following reasons:

  1. Evidence of altering the substance of the proxy
  2. Lack of clear intent to award the proxy to a given municipality or administrative official, or
  3. Where a municipal proxy recipient already holds a proxy for another city or town

The proxy form (need link) should be submitted to the Executive Director or other League staff well before the Board elections occurs on Tuesday, June 25 at the summer conference. If mailed or e-mailed prior to the conference, it should arrive at the League office at least five days prior to the election. No faxes will be accepted. I have an idea for MML Legislation!

As the dust settles from the 2019 General Assembly session and the members of the legislature prepare for the elections in the fall, MML is now accepting requests for legislative priorities for the 2020 legislative session. The deadline for submission is Friday, July 26, 2019. To submit a legislative request, please complete the form, which can be found here: 2020 LAR Form. Please remember that each municipality, chapter, or department is limited to up to three legislative requests and each LAR must be verified and signed by a representative of the municipality, Chapter, or Department prior to submission showing each LAR was approved/endorsed at a meeting of the jurisdiction submitting the LAR. Instructions for submission are included on the LAR submission form.
